Aviation ministry cancels nod for Aranmula airport

New Delhi: The Union Ministry for Civil Aviation has cancelled the in-principle sanction given to the proposed airport project at Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala.

Earlier, the Defence Ministry had withdrawn the no-objection certificate (NOC) for the Rs 2,000-crore project on May 8 in the backdrop of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) cancelling the Environment Clearance granted for the project.

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar clarified on Tuesday that the NDA government had never favoured the controversial airport project and no sanction had been given since the government assumed office last year.

The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation had earlier in the month stated that the in-principle sanction given to the project promoted by the KGS Group would be re-examined.

The ministry took the decision in the wake of the objections raised by the ministries of Defence and Environment and Forests (MoEF).

Earlier, three ministries had given nod to the project. Among these, the sanction given by the MoEF was cancelled by the NGT and the apex court had upheld the decision.

The Ministry of Defence gave sanction to the project in 2011 during the UPA Government’s regime.
