Kottayam (Dakshin Kerala): Eight families will move into ‘Sneha Nikunjam’ on the 23rd. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will hand over the keys.
This marks the revival of dreams washed away in the catastrophic landslide that destroyed everything four years ago. The project, named “Thala chaykkan Oru Idam” (A Place to Rest the Head), has been completed in collaboration with the Infosys Foundation.
This initiative stands out because it was carried forward and completed entirely through consistent efforts by Sevabharathi, at a time when government mechanisms continued to display a negligent attitude toward providing justice to those affected in areas like Kavalappara and Meppadi.
Sevabharathi had earlier promised to build houses for 12 families who had lost their homes entirely. Four families were already given homes. The remaining eight did not even own land. Sevabharathi purchased land for them and built eight ‘Sneha Kudumbams’ (Homes of Affection), which are now ready for housewarming.
Sevabharathi has stood with the victims since the 2021 floods. The organization’s volunteers began the mission of rebuilding Kootikkal by daringly reconstructing three bridges that had been washed away. Around 800 mud-filled, unhygienic houses were cleaned and made livable. Over 450 public institutions — including mosques, temples, hospitals, and schools — were cleaned. Twelve roads were made motorable. Many houses were repaired. Emergency financial aid of ₹1 lakh each was given to three families. Essentials, including household appliances, were delivered for resettlement.
Now, as these eight families arrive at ‘Sneha Nikunjam’ holding on to their memories, an unparalleled service mission reaches its fulfillment.
